Real Life Racing Strategies = Success in the Fantasy Game

Hi horse racing fans. I wanted to drop by and give all of you a few quick tips for when you play the game. As you probably already know, one of the great things about the game is its lifelike quality. Because of that, many strategies that are effective in live horse racing also translate into effective strategies within the game. If you’re just starting out in the game, or even if you’ve played some and are looking for a way to improve, one of the most important things you can do is to encourage your horse to break from the gate. You can even give them a couple really quick shoulder spankings. After that, the best thing to do is just leave them alone and let them find their own pace. But it’s crucial not to get in a position where you’re eight wide. You need to be savvy and feel where the slots are being created, then do your best to get the horse into the rails. After that, you can just leave the horse alone and let him cruise at the overall pace. When you reach the 3/8th pole, that’s when it’s time to start “knuckling” the horse a bit, meaning to just give a slight tug on the his neck (not really hard), which will help quicken him a bit. You’ll then want to stay quite for another 1/8th of a mile. Finally, once you reach the quarter pole, that’s when you go all out – essentially putting the “pedal to the medal.” If you don’t win in that case, it’s likely that you just got outrun.

Another great thing to do that will help improve your performance is to take advantage of replays. If I can’t remember every single stride of a horse, I go back and watch his previous races. One of the coolest things about this game is that it allows you to try different scenarios. If you didn’t do well in a race, you have the option to watch the horse run, then come back and ride it. The game allows for so much flexibility, allowing you to ride the race again and create the same field, but use a different tactic. You can do this as many times as you want and learn from each race you run. Unlike live racing, when you play the game, you have the option to try again. That’s one of the many things that makes the game so much fun to play.

Thanks and Good Luck Saturday!

Hi Kent -
It's a pleasure to have a jockey such as yourself participate in this site. Thanks for the tips! I've found in the game the 3/8 pole is pretty much when you want to try to get things into gear, so that was good to read from you! Best of luck this Saturday on Big Brown! (Also, check the Chicago Tribune web site if you haven't already; they did a nice article this week that featured many quotes from your mother and your Louisiana upbringing.)
Best,
Ken
