Watching Barbaro's seemingly effortless victory in the Kentucky Derby and how all Edgar Prado did was flash the whip in front of his right eye in the stretch to remind him not to loaf, a thought occurred to me: What would've happened had Prado, defying all conventional wisdom, given Barbaro 3 or 4 lashes at the quarter pole? What would the margin of victory have been? Would he have been able to break two minutes? Obviously, Prado would have been insane to do such a foolhardy thing when his horse was running so easily, particularly with the Preakness and the Belmont looming. But fantasy is what this community is all about, so I thought I'd bring it up. Another interesting thing to ponder is whether my fantasy scenario would've hastened the breakdown he suffered in the Preakness? Nobody knows, but I would very much like all of you to weigh in. There are no right or wrong answers. Just share your thoughts! Just in case you wanted to relive the magic, here's that magical first Saturday in May, 2006:

Who knows?
Thanks for sharing this great moment from Barbaro. He was a truly great racehorse. I think he could have won the English Derby too he was that good on turf!
Breakdown
I don't understand why no one talks about how Brother Derek clipped Barbaro's leg in the Preakness, which clearly led to the injury. In any event, this was a great racehorse and a very sad tragedy.
Barbaro
I remember watching the Kentucky Derby and the way Barbaro exploded I was just like wow this is potentially a great horse. Unfortunately we never really got to see how he would develop but there is always that what if.
Here's the thing
I once gave him a ride from Lincoln Center to Madison Square Garden. Good tipper.
My take
I don't think Prado would have been out of line if he hit him once or twice at around the quarter pole. After all, he didn't know the horse would draw away so powerfully. I'm glad he didn't in hindsight, but if he did maybe another two-fifths of a second can be taken away from his final time.
That's what's so sad
at least from a racing perspective, about him breaking down. He was a remarkably versatile horse. Not many can run that well on both surfaces.
If Prado had gone to the whip
he would have been eviscerated in the press, but Barbaro would have probably come close to two minutes, I think.
The blast explodes UP & OUT!
Still
I still don't get why no one talks about how the injury really hapened.
