About Joe Talamo

For most athletes, winning your sport’s most prestigious award at the age of 18 would be a singular achievement. But most athletes aren’t like Joe Talamo, one of horse racing’s fastest rising young stars. When Joe brought home the Eclipse Award as 2007’s outstanding apprentice jockey, it was just another stop on what’s been a brief but incredible ride. Born in 1990 in Marrero, Louisiana, Joe began going to the track with his trainer father at age 7.

At age 11 he was training on thoroughbreds for Terry Gabriel at the prestigious Folsom Training Center. Excelling in almost every discipline, he began riding (and winning) a few short years later at Louisiana Downs. Since then, it has been countless stakes racing wins at the most famous tracks in the world, including: Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Delta Downs. And with talent to burn and a maturity beyond his years, the future looks even brighter. Joe Talamo is horse racing’s answer to Shawn White, Vince Young or Dwight Howard – the kind of young star who has the ability to transform his sport.

Hey Joe. You have had an awesome career already! I look forward to reading your writings in here. I've always wanted to know if some horses are more physically tiring to ride than others. Is it tougher on the body to ride 2 year olds, than 3 year olds? And what is it like to ride 3 year olds physically compared to older horses? Have there ever been any horses that you just refused to ride?
