Here are some of my selections for Oaks and Derby Day.
Friday:
Race 9
Nistle's Crunch - Ran huge at Keeneland last time out. Ran a big number and could have gone much faster.
Sailor's Cap - Is in top form right now.
Cannonball - Has been running well as of late, and ran a huge race two back.
Race 10
Bsharpsonata - Has run well at every distance on every surface imaginable. She's ultra consistent, and she should run another big one here after a perfect prep at Keeneland.
Proud Spell - Is certainly the class of the field and can't be thrown out here. Didn't like the Synthetic surface in her last.
Rasierra - Has a big shot to hit the board at an enormous price.
Saturday
Race 5
Junior College - Looks like the fastest horse on the sheets and should be a decent price, but 7 furlongs remains a question mark.
Noonmark - Is probably the most proven horse at this distance, but appears vulnerable in this spot. Tough to toss completely, though.
Race 6
Informed Decision - Took a nice step forward at Keeneland last time. Appears to be talented. Faces an extremely tough field here.
Alina - Finished a close second to Eight Belles last time out, and won a small stakes by almost 19 lengths before that. Has been a monster since switching to the Asmussen barn. The most likely winner.
Race 10
I have completely tossed both of the favorites. Big Brown doesn't want to go this far and Colonel John has too many question marks for me, plus he's a big, long-striding horse... which means it takes him a while to get going, which in turn means that if he gets stopped or gets into any traffic trouble at all, he's done. I prefer a more atheltic, agile horse in here.
Denis of Cork - Is athletic and agile enough to recover from some traffic trouble. He ran a good one two back, but bounced and had a trouble trip last time out. He can rebound here, has a nice closing style, which should help his chances in here. Will be a huge price.
Court Vision - I hate seeing equipment changes going into the Derby, but he worked really well the other day with the addition of blinkers. He is by Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Gulch, but so was 1995 Derby winner Thunder Gulch.
Pyro - Toss his last race. He obviously hated the Sythetic track at Keeneland. He's still a very talented colt, who can rebound at a good price in here.
Z Fortune - I really don't like him that much, but I like him more than anyone else. Can close for a piece.
Good luck, and thanks for reading.
