Super Bowl XLIV at the Sun Life Stadium will be played on Sunday February 7, 2010 with a kickoff time set for 6:28 PM EDT/5:28 CDT. The Super Bowl is far and away the most watched sporting event the United States, and of the top 20 most watched broadcasts in the history of American television networks, 10 of them are Super Bowls. Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial national holiday, and the media coverage of the event is widespread. In fact, in today's information age it's almost impossible to avoid all coverage of the game, especially in the week leading up to the big game, and on Sunday itself? Forget about it! It's routine to see literally 5 full hours of pre-game coverage on the network that broadcasts the game, and before the current days when pretty much everyone who watches the game has cable, and therefore ESPN, that was what people would do: they'd get together for a Super Bowl Party, turn on the station that broadcasted the game, and keep it there. But in the 21st Century with ESPN, NFL Network, FOX Sports, and the many other choices, fans who don't find the 5 hour pregame coverage to be enough (and believe me, there are plenty fans out there just like that!), they can wake up at 6:30 am (12 HOURS before kickoff!!!) and turn on ESPN and switch to NFL Network throughout the day for exhaustive, in-depth coverage of every single aspect of the game. Some fans will be glued to the TV with their laptops connected to the internet literally right up to the second of the kickoff.
Of course the super hype leading up to the game doesn't guarantee that the actual game will live up to those expectations. In fact, many times the Super Bowl has turned into a major disappointment for fans that were hoping for an exciting game that came down to the final minutes or seconds. Rarely has the game actually lived up to the tremendous hype, but those rare occasions have provided thrills that fans will remember for the rest of their lives. Who can forget the great catch by Santonio Holmes in last year's game? Or how about when Joe Montana led the 49ers on that amazing drive in the final minutes of Super Bowl XXIII? One of my favorites was when the underdog Patriots beat the heavily favored Rams in New Orleans with a last second field goal.
The Breeders' Cup is often referred to as the Super Bowl of racing, and like the game itself, the marquee Breeders' Cup Classic is tremendously hyped. It doesn't live up to the hype very often, but there have been years when the race provides racing fans what everyone wants to see: the very best horses in training duking it out in the stretch drive of the biggest race of the year. Such was the case in the 1989 Breeders' Cup Classic when the two best horses that year, 3-year-olds Sunday Silence and Easy Goer, who had met in the Triple Crown series with Sunday Silence holding a 2-1 edge over his rival, met one final time in the Classic, with Horse of the Year honors on the line. The hype leading up to the race was intense, and before it was even run it was being hailed as The Race of the Decade.
