The 2010 Kentucky Derby on May 1st will be the 136th running of the race that is known around the globe as The Run For the Roses. It's the first leg of what is known as The Triple Crown of American racing and is open only to three-year-old thoroughbreds, and is run at the historic racetrack in Louiville, Kentucky known as Churchill Downs. The race is known for it's pageantry and extensive media coverage, and has seen many of the greatest racehorses that have ever set foot on a racetrack compete. All eleven of the Triple Crown winners in racing history have had to win the race, which some experts contend is just as difficult to win as the Belmont Stakes in the modern era because of the huge number of horses entered in the race, often 20 or more. The field for the Kentucky Derby is, in this modern era of racing, always by far the largest that horses have ever experienced up to that point in their lives, and with rare exceptions, will be the largest they ever compete against in their entire racing careers.
The 2010 Kentucky Derby will be one that no doubt features a field of, at the very least, 20 horses and, if we are lucky, we will get the chance to see the same type of excitement the 2009 Derby provided. As you may recall, the 50-1 longshot gelding Mine That Bird, with the great Calvin Borel aboard, came from dead last with 3/8ths of a mile to run to score one of the most unlikely Kentucky Derby victories ever. Who knows? We may get the chance to see a Triple Crown run like the great Secretariat gave us in 1973 get started, but one thing is for certain: there's only one chance for you to see it LIVE, whether on TV or in person at Churchill Downs, so don't miss out on the racing action!
