workouts

Horses like Humans have to train for running events. When you are reading a Daily Racing Form, the formal training (Workouts) are listed. Most horses gallop every day for exercise. The workouts are like the hard workout, or maybe even a time trial the old track coach would give to gage his team. The workouts can help a trainer and the racing fan gage where that horse might be in terms of that horse’s fitness. Workouts do not show up in the fantasy game, but boy oh boy they show up in the real world.
The most common time to use workouts is for a two-year old race full of first-time starters. With no actually races to gage, many players look at the workouts to see if there is an indication of horse performance. A fast workout does not necessarily mean a good race. The best example I can think of is the 2003 Belmont stakes with Funny Cide going for the Triple Crown. During the week heading into the Belmont, Funny Cide worked a blistering fast 5 furlongs( 5/8 of a mile) in 58 seconds and change, a time many horses run in an actual race. I am not going to put the entire excuse on his loss on that workout, but I want you to watch Funny Cide, and notice how rank(uncomfortable) he seems. That workout had Funny Cide ready to run a much shorter distance than a mile and a half as he fights with jockey Jose Santos.

works

It seems like it is really important to actually see a workout. Because if a horse runs 5f in 1:01 easily it is much different than if a horse runs 5f in 1:01 while under a lot of encouragement. That's why I like Derby week, they show all the works on tv!

Funny Cide

Funny Cide didn't have a chance in the Belmont anyway. He was overrated and I made a lot of money betting on Empire Maker that day!

Man, I hear ya

I gotta get in shape now. Too much sitting has ruined my body. Too much abuse has gone on for too long. From now on I'm gonna do 50 push-ups each morning, 50 pull-ups. There'll be no more pills, there'll be no more bad food, no more destroyers of my body. From now on it'll be total organization. Every muscle must be tight!

Right on!

I never really bought into Funny Cide either. Good comment.

Thanks for info about Funny Cide

I never knew about that workout at the time, but you make a great point. That must've keyed him up too much.

The blast explodes UP & OUT!
