Speed can be both a great blessing and a great curse. There is a phrase called “lone speed” which a lot of times can be equal to gold. The horse or horses o the lead have a great deal to do with how the race will set up. If a horse is loose on the lead and is relaxed, that’s the key, then the horse has a very good chance to take the race wire to wire. However problems arise if there are other speed horses pressing for that lead. It can very easily turn into a lose-lose situation with the speed dueling itself into defeat. I will provide two examples. An example of “lone speed” in action is War Emblem’s victory in the 2002 Kentucky Derby. War Emblem was allowed to get an unchallenged lead and he cruised to victory. The opposite happened in the 2003 Breeders Cup Classic when favored Medaglia d’ Oro and Congaree dueled each other into defeat.

Interesting
Thanks for the post! I'm relatively new to the track and had never heard of "lone speed" before, so this was a helpful introduction.
Dr. Fager
Thanks for the interesting post! I watched the videos of Dr. Fager and it looks like he could win even after dueling for most of the race. Is this because he has a big heart you think?
re: Dr. Fagar
I am not sure why Dr. Fagar was so special, I know Secretariat had an abnormally large heart.
