Spectacular Bid: Smooth as silk in the Kentucky Derby

gfn02's picture

The 1970's was indeed the Golden Age of thoroughbred racing. 1973 belonged to SECRETARIAT, then you had Forego and Ruffian. The last three years of the decade saw Seattle Slew and Affirmed win the Triple Crown, with Affirmed driven to his best by his perpetual shadow Alydar. Affirmed was still racing in 1979 and would go on to win his second Horse of the Year award, but in May Spectacular Bid began his assault on the Triple Crown. He would come up short in the Belmont, but when you watch his performance in the Derby it's hard to deny the power of this incredible horse. Dave Johnson had the call from Churchill Downs:

You can have the honor of riding Spectacular Bid, one of history's greatest horses, in our online racing game. The natural inclination would be to saddle him up and ride him to victory in the Belmont so that you could change history. It's all up to you at Horse Racing Fantasy!

The Bid

One nail and a fresh rival in Coastal cost us a Triple Crown and maybe some of the recognition that Bid so richly deserved.

P.S.-To the designers of the upcoming Stars of the 1970's,Please consider Sham (One of my favorites) and Coastal for the file.
I BADLY want to re-run a facismile of the 1979 Belmont!!!!
