Secretariat won the 1972 Sanford Stakes, his first stakes win; Easy Goer was just as impressive in the 1988 Cowdin Stakes! It's easy to see why Easy Goer was compared to the most famous of all famous racehorses, Secretariat. In Secretariat's first race, run on July 4, 1972, he was nearly knocked down by two horses coming out of the gate, got caught in traffic, and then rallied to finish fourth, just a length behind the winner, in a 5.5 furlong race. Easy Goer's maiden race was August 1, 1988, and he didn't win, either, though he did finish second, losing by just a nose. After Secretariat won his first race in his second start, he ventured up to Saratoga for an allowance race, which he won, and then in his fourth start he ran in his first stakes race, The Sanford Stakes, where he split horses in the stretch and drew off to win by about three lengths. He would never again start in an allowance race.
Easy Goer's first four races are remarkably similar to Secretariat's. He failed to win his maiden, won his second attempt, then won an allowance, and in his fourth start, he also faced his first race against stakes competition. In Easy Goer's case it was the six furlong Cowdin Stakes. Winners Laugh had a solid lead in the stretch and clear running room. Then Easy Goer came to him in a rush, showing off a powerful kick, and blew Winners Laugh away down the stretch to win by three.
Both Secretariat and Easy Goer were descended from royalty, with Secretariat's sire being Bold Ruler and Easy Goer's being Alydar. Both of them showed the kind of talent as juvenile horses that had them touted as Triple Crown contenders. True, Easy Goer didn't end up actually winning the Triple Crown, but he certainly had an amazing talent. Watch him in action right here in the aforementioned Cowdin Stakes, run at Belmont Park on October 10, 1988. Easy Goer was the overwhelming odd-on favorite, at 3 to 10, in his first-ever stakes race. At least in that respect, he had a leg up on Secretariat because when he ran in the 1972 Sanford, his first stakes race, he wasn't the favorite. That turned out to be the only time in his career that he wasn't.
