The principle photography on the movie on the incomparable SECRETARIAT has finished within the past week. The film which is being produced by Disney and Mayhem Pictures, is highly anticipated by the legions of fans that the great racehorse still has, generations after his amazing performance in 1973 when he became the 9th Triple Crown Champion in racing history and the first since Citation had done it in 1948. Diane Lane, known most famously to my generation as Cherry from the memorable 1983 film The Outsiders, will star in the film as Penny Chenery (she was actually Penny Tweedy back then), and a source close to the production has informed me that she is very good in her portrayal of the Mistress of the Meadow Stable, who took over leadership of the entire operation after her father Christopher Chenery fell ill in 1972 end eventually passed away later that year.
Filming of the picture took place on location in Keeneland, Kentucky and Louisiana, and my source tells me that it came in on time and under budget. William Nack, the man who wrote the definitive book on Big Red called SECRETARIAT: The Making of a Champion, served as the consultant for the production, and why not? He spent more time with the horse during his Triple Crown run than any other human being with the exception of his groom Eddie Sweat, so Nack's wisdom will undoubtedly lend an air of authenticity to the film, which will have fans like me watching closely. My source informed me that several different horses were used in the production to play the horse, and was truly surprised at how much they looked like Secretariat.
The editing process has begun and is expected to take a few months, and no definitive date has yet been announced for when the world broadcast of the movie will be.
