Video of the Day: Winning Colors beats the boys!

gfn02's picture

Sadly, her life ended on February 18th of this year, but this years' Kentucky Derby will mark the 20th anniversary of Winning Colors and her thrilling victory in the 1988 Kentucky Derby, becoming only the third filly in racing history (Regret 1915 and Genuine Risk 1980 were the others) to win racing's most prestigious race. No filly has done it since, so I figured that we'd celebrate the old girl, being it's the 20th anniversary and all. Beating the boys was no fluke for winning colors: she had won the Santa Anita Derby a month previously in dominating fashion, winning by 7.5 lengths. Two other fantastic colts were in the 17 horse field: FortyNiner and Risen Star, son of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Not only does she win, but she does it wire-to-wire, the most difficult way to win the Derby. Gary Stevens was aboard; relive the memory now:

Gary Stevens, reflecting on this Hall-of-Fame Champion shortly after her death, said, “She’s one of my favorites of all-time. She put me on the map. I won my first classic (race) on her and it started a roll for me: national TV, the Kentucky Derby; it was a great ride.”

Rest in Peace, Winning Colors. You will never be forgotten.

Remembering Winning Colors

That video just reminds me what a great horse she truly was. I was just a kid when she won that famous '88 Derby and it's something I can remember talking about with my dad. Such a good idea to recognize the contributions Winning Colors made to the sport...they definitely won't be forgotten anytime soon.

re: Winning Colors

As exciting as that Derby was, I think the 2007 Belmont Stakes with Rags to Riches and future Horse of the Year Curlin is one of the most exciting finishes ever. It is a shame that they only drew 45,000 for that race.

No kidding!

Yeah, I'd agree with you that the 2007 Belmont Stakes was pretty awesome, though I still think that the victory of Winning Colors that year has a slight edge (in my book). Any idea how many people were present for that race?

I think so too!

After digging around for awhile, I found that 137,694 were in attendance for the 1988 Run for the Roses, which was the third highest in history at that time. Attendance at the Derby has exploded from 1995 until the present day (not a single year under 140,000), but even with that fact, the '88 Derby still ranks 16th all-time in attendance.

Rags

This thread reminded me to mention that Rags to Riches worked out yesterday! Can't wait until this super filly comes back.

Rags

I just hope Rags comes back 100 percent. A lot of times these mares come back after a long time off and simply don't want to run very well. And I've heard Rags has serious attitude problems so who knows.

I'm curious too

Thing about Rags is that she hasn't shown a lot of speed, but has uncommonly good stamina, a rare thing these days. Like you I hope she regains her pre-injury form because maybe she developed some more speed to go with that stamina. My fingers are crossed, that's for sure.
