The 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic featured a supremely talented field, including Silver Charm, Victory Gallop, and Skip Away. Quite simply, this field was arguably the most talent-laden in the the history of that prestigious race. There are some, to my mind, very interesting aspects of this race to consider. The most notable one is that the winning horse in this race was snubbed when it came time to hand out the 1998 Eclipse Awards, which is odd.
Take a look at the race and then I'll get into it further:
Skip Away won 7 of his 9 starts that year, including wins in the Donn Handicap, Pimlico Special, Hollywood Gold Cup, and the Woodward. However, he lost his final two races in disappointing fashion, fading badly in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, then failing to fire when Jerry Bailey asked him at the quarter pole in the Classic (as you just saw). On the other hand, Awesome Again was a perfect 6 for 6 in 1998, including wins in the Saratoga Breeders' Cup, the Whitney, and this, the Breeders' Cup Classic, a race in which he defeated a Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner (Silver Charm), a Belmont winner, and the horse that would, as of this writing, finish his career second behind only Cigar in lifetime earnings (Skip Away). The two obvious questions are: 1) Why was Skip Away still voted Horse of the Year, 2) Why was Awesome Again, a Canadian Hall-of-Famer, not awarded a single Eclipse Award after two years of racing which saw him win the Jim Dandy, Travers, Queen's Plate, and the aforementioned high-profile races? These are NOT rhetorical questions. I honestly do not know the answers.
