The SECRETARIAT Project

The crude little video that started it all!

October and November is always a period of transition for me. My job requires me to travel and live on the road from April to the first week of October, so I'm always a little out of sorts upon my return home. 2006 was no different, except that I had picked up a copy of the out-of-print 2-cd Superman soundtrack. I had re-read Nack's book on SECRETARIAT in September of that year, and being the Superman fan that I am, I was also eagerly awaiting the release of Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut on DVD. The computer that I had at the time was bought in 1997 and was agonizingly slow, but it did have the bare-bones editing program called Windows Movie Maker, which I had absolutely no idea how to use. So when I got home I started teaching myself how to use the program. Progress was slower than a snail's pace, but after about 4 weeks back I had sort of figured out how to make a basic video. Also, a friendly YouTuber with the handle pointrico generously sent me an mp3 file of the film version of the main title to Superman The Movie, which was not included in the soundtrack I had obtained, and I also got my hands on a really terrible-quality video of the 1973 Belmont. By the first week of November I had the bare minimum of skill and audio/visual elements needed to take a crack at my first YouTube video. At the time I had no grand idea of an organized project; this was purely a lark. What you are about to see is very quaint compared to the more refined videos the project now features, but everyone has to start somewhere, and this video was the very first entry in what was to become The SECRETARIAT Project.

Next time I will share with you my efforts to attempt to improve my awful editing skills.
