Rachel Alexandra has the charisma of another Horse of the Year: 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat!

The thing about the truly great horses is that they do great things when the lights shine brightest, and then they surpass our expectations; with 2009 Horse of the Year to be decided soon, I thought it appropriate to consider how truly historic Rachel Alexandra's win really was, and how her charisma is similar to that of another great horse from a bygone era: Secretariat. No, I'm not saying the great filly is as good or entering into a debate about their relative talents. All I'm saying is that they are both that rarest example of what we as racing fans are so desperate for: horses that we will drop everything to see run.
Many fans complained loudly that Rachel Alexandra wasn't entered in the 2009 Kentucky Derby, even though she crushed her female opponents by a record margin of over 20 lengths in the Kentucky Oaks. After taking over as principle owner, Jess Jackson paid the supplementary fee and entered the fantastic filly in the Preakness, and in the process stole Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird's jockey Calvin Borel for the race. Borel told everyone who wanted to listen after the Oaks that this filly was the greatest horse he had ever ridden, and after the Preakness, we started to believe him.

What an amazing moment. The thing about the 1973 Preakness with Secretariat is that, from a certain perspective, the race is arguably the least well-remembered of his Triple Crown wins, but that's really only because of the fact that it was the middle of the three. One thing about Secretariat is that he was absolutely electrifying; he had a way of running that seemed to defy logic and convention, and that's what makes his Preakness win so impressive. He was the favorite, very much so, but there wasn't a soul that thought he would make a move so powerful that early in the race and then be able to win so easily, especially without his jockey Ron Turcotte even cocking his stick! You talk about charisma? Well, Rachel Alexandra and Secretariat had it!

The Queen of Charisma - Zenyatta

Charisma is indeed what many great horses have. Rachel Alexandra and Secretariat I agree have (had) it. I have never however, in 30 years of being a Horse Racing Fan, seen a horse with as much of it as Zenyatta. Her signature pawing, her alertness, and just the way she holds herself is second to none. Rachel Alexandra may end up beating Zenyatta for HORSE OF THE YEAR, but I am afraid she finishes second here. My vote goes to Zenyatta - The Queen of Charisma.

zenyatta over rachel

Zenyatta in the classic beat the same horses Rachel beat and better.......she defeated arguably the best grass horse in America (Gio Ponti)......and the older horses that Rachel beat were not even close to the level Zenyatta ran against, Einstein alone is better then that field of older horses Rachel beat, Einstein came 3rd in the Clark handicap while Macho again finished 6th the same horse who gave rachel a run for her money against older males. . (life is sweet) who zenyatta beat often went and beat the rest of the remaining females in the ladies classic.....personally i think careless jewel is better on a dirt surface and the synthetic at woodbine.

MY VOTE GOES TO ZENYATTA

p.s
I think this horse needs to get her respect as the best of our time. she does what she has to do to win she closes on 25:04 opening 1/4
and 49:58 1/2 and wins under a hand ride u dont think that is great?

Bottum Line

Rachel's owner never gave her a chance at horse of the year.
By 'Ducking' the Breeders Cup and The Zen Master winning it,He sealed her fate.
You can't win it,if your not in it.

Those 2 Great Champions should have faced off 'Mano e Mano' (woman style)

Now it's all over but the crying.\The only thing left is to give the 'Charismas' Present to ZENYATTA!!!
