Lady's Secret (click here to ride her to victory yourself!) could, as has been mentioned several times before by our staff at Horse Racing Fantasy, compete with and defeat males and older mares. The first time she demonstrated that ability was in the 1985 Ruffian Handicap, which was her 7th consecutive win overall and her 2nd straight Grade I win. Back in 1985 the Breeders' Cup Distaff was run at a mile and a quarter. Although her small frame was ideal for the D. Wayne Lukas-trained daughter of Secretariat to run longer distances like 10 furlongs, there were grumblings among some of the experts that her frontrunning style would make winning at that distance a difficult proposition. In response, Lukas entered her in the Grade I Beldame Stakes, and she was engaged at the start of the race in a speed duel, to which she responded well. If there was ever a time for her to be out of gas for the final furlong, this was it. But, as you'll see, the "Iron Lady" drew off and won with resounding authority against older fillies and mares!
