The Making of a Champion Thoroughbred: A Race Horse Owner’s Blog - Entry 14

Frank the Barber

It has been a long off season here in NJ and come Memorial Day it usually signifies the beginning of NJ racing in full bloom.

Over the past months I have outlined many of the different issues my partnership has experienced in it attempt to get its horses to the track.

Well we finally have our first horse entered in a 2009 race. This Saturday Frank the Barber continues his long road toward NJ racing. Starting in California, switching tack to our training center and he now resides on the backstretch of Monmouth.

All along he has been in great shape, his issues were more mental then physical and we needed to spot him somewhere where he can regain his old form. Ultimately, we know his future is going long in Jersey Bred stakes but we felt that he needed a race now. He is running on Saturday from post 4 in the John J Reilly Stakes going 6 furlongs.

It will be a very tough spot. First race off of a 13 weeks lay off is tough enough but IMHO he races against the 3 best Jersey bred sprinters, Joey P and Whos the Cowboy have been mainstays for 4 years and while their best years are behind them they still have back class ...as they both reach for 1,000,000 in earnings. Also in the race is Unwritten, maybe the NEXT sprinter in NJ who should, in my gut, be the favorite. The card also drew 3 up and comers and a couple horses targeting a longer stakes race next month (like us).....what I am saying is this is a tough spot but if we can pick up a check I will be very pleased.

Wish us luck and maybe I will see some of you at the track. PS Beacon is hoping to enter a race for Sunday, as long as it does not overfill.

beacon Beach is entered to

beacon Beach is entered to run sunday in race 8 from post position 5. The race is a J-bred allowance has 13 entrants. Full field and inside post is not my favorite but Beacon should have enough gate speed to get out of trouble. We hope.

Both (Frank and Beacon) races we have Eclipse winning Jockey Paco Lopez on their back.

What track?

Hope he wins or at least runs a good race, making you and your partners proud of him. What racetrack is he going to be running at? Is it a New Jersey track? I was at Golden Gate Fields today and didn't see a New Jersey track. I did see and bet on Belmont though. Plus, all the others.
In a private conversation I had with Mr. Harry Aleo, when his Lost In The Fog was running and winning, he said that no matter how big you are with these great horses, you still have to have some $12,000 maiden claimers in your stable. He did. He got just as excited when they won. Anyway, good luck.

Good Luck!

Just looked at the sheets for the race, and you're right, that race came up super tough. The rail horse and Joey P look solid. Hopefully Frank can work out a trip and get a check.

May they all come home safely!!!
