Getting Close

Atlantic City open up this week with its big 6 days meet, so they can keep simulcasting all year round. But for the first time it feels like horse racing season! I think I may take a day off from work next week and go see the races live. Never been there and I like seeing new tracks.

Our three horses in training (Karmageddon, Beacon Beach and Frank the Barber) are looking good right now and training and knock on wood no major issues. Pinelands Pete continue to grow on the farm and should be back in training soon.

Monmouth’s first official race is May 9th and it just a matter of time before one of our runners makes his first appearance. Not too soon because I would like some money coming back and after a long winter of nothing but writing checks I am feeling it in the wallet.

I think Frank will be the first to race. He is in good shape…but that was never his problem. It was his head that brings us challenges. The last couple weeks of rest and occasional gallop have gotten Frank to a point where I am starting to see a quality horse in there, not just a basket case He is still head strong but is now showing flashes of being a good horse. The next question would be where to place him.

Talk right now is a couple of overnight stakes in mid-May. One is 6 furlongs for NJ breds on the dirt, the other open company going 8 furlongs on the turf. He fits in both spots according to the trainer…but that is what scares me. To me with such contrasting races it sounds like we are shooting arrows in the dark and don’t really know where he fits…my guess anything can happen. Last or first your guess is good as mine.

We will probably nominate for both races and see what happens over the next three weeks. The horse is still headstrong and somewhat of a mystery but I am feeling better about the risk we took.

That is all for now….really tired and want to relax on the couch.
