The Making of a Champion Thoroughbred: A Race Horse Owner’s Blog - Entry 19

Well its been a long time since I posted, so with only 3 weeks left in the NJ racing season I thought I would update how our horses did this racing season.

Beacon Beach: Beacon ran 10 times this year...and we had mixed results. Beacon struggled to get through his 1x condition. While it was frustrating at times it was a blessing. He kept finishing second and 2nd pays good money...and because of him we were able to pay the bills until the babies began to run. Finally on a cold October night Beacon won his 1x race by a short head. It was a great feeling. We decided to try him long since he was only sprinting and Beacon really did poorly and finished a weak 10th. He was mentally not their so we decided to give him the rest of the winter off and bring him back next year. Hopefully he can conquer his last condition and we can start running him on the turf. He has big feet, smooth action and Straight Man colts seem to take to turfing well. So we are excited about 2010 with him. He finished the year 10-1-4-3. His career earnings stand at $115,000 and we are pleased with this guy.

Frank the Barber- Frank was a major disappointment, and I can say to the other partners because I did not want to buy him but was outvoted. He started in stakes races and at one point we dropped him to 10k claimers. He wanted the turf but the weather back east was so poor he rarely got to go. We decided to take him out of NJ to run in Massachusetts to face easier company...maybe if he wins he would mentally get his mind back in the game and not quit every race. It did the trick and after two races in MA he won one and lost another by a short head. He came back to NJ and faced tougher company, while he ran well he finished 6th. He continues to remain in training to run some more but not sure how well hell do. His 2009 record was 7-1-1-1 and earning a paltry 18k. Trust me he cost a lot more in training bills.

Pinelands Pete- Pete was our 2 year old colt who really did not train well early on, toward August he started to get things together showing an excellent turn of foot but we were worried he had no heart and would quit if facing other horses. We were wrong. Much to our surprise he won his very first race he ever ran in Special Weight company. Shocked we were, using yoda speak. His second race he faced tougher company in PA and came in a game second. We decided to put him in the NJ Juvenile stakes last night and Pete came in 3rd. He missed second by a head bob, and had a tough trip, he slipped coming out of the gate and tore a quarter crack which probably was painful. All things considered Pete did great and in three races won one, second once and third once. We are very excited for next year...we may try one more race if the right race comes up otherwise we will shut him down until March for an exciting 2010 campaign.

Lastly, Karmageddon- our promissing filly lived up to expectations. Last night she WON the NJ Juvenile Stakes for two year old fillies. Staking her claim as the best NJ bred 2 year old filly this year. Video of her win found here: http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/utils/flash_pop.aspx?vp=Web&vc=1&vid1=m...

In three races she won 2 and came in second in 1. We did not expect her to be that good. She still has a small butt and could use some time to grow into her body so we are going to give her the winter off. She has smarts and a very flexible running style. We even received an offer to buy her before she won her maiden, we said NO. In three races she has earned over 75k in earnings. With black type now in her pedigree, she may replace her mother (who died this summer) eventually as our broodmare.

Our 2009 record was 23 starts-5 wins- 7-seconds and 4 thirds with over $217,675 earnings. Thank you to those have been following us this season and will update you soon on any new developments.

Sorry to hear that about

Sorry to hear that about Kismet. She seemed to be a pretty good broodmare produce both Beacon Beach and Karmageddon. My question is do you think that Karma will race in open company next year instead of just NJ breds, she seems good enough. Her first race was visually impressive because she had to go 5-6 wide and still held on for second. I think the horse that beat her in that race went on to win a stakes as well. So, I think she could easily compete at that level. As for Pinelands Pete, he seems to want to go about 5f cause he was spent after that 22 flat 1/4. He really struggled home in that last race. If a race comes up at 5-5.5f in the next couple of weeks for NJ breds in allowance company, he should romp. Yeah and I watched Beacon's last race, and he looked like he wanted no part of that company, showed no effort as he had in the other nine races of this year. I don't know if there are any easier classes for him besides claimers, but he was simply throttled in that last race. Maybe try and find a spot at the Meadowlands in an O/C 23k cause they have those. I agree with you about Frank, he was a bust, only 18k in 7 starts eek. -Update your website also it seems to be a little outta date.

Very astute

Very astute observations.

The loss of Kismet was tough, she was doing well. At least we two more babies from her, Beach Badge a female yearling out of Medalist and unnamed weanling by Defrere.

The horse that beat Karma was Lil Kiara and she went on to win the Maryland million juvenile race. She came in 4th in karmas latest race. As for next year. She has one more Jbred condition and from there she can either go back to open allowance company (jersey allows you to run restricted races and then go into open races) or into J bred stakes races (not many only a few are carded). If she continues to grow and fill out her rump she may be good enough for open company. The problem is you never know what happens over the winter. A lot of times good 2 year olds never matures anymore and become poor three year olds....I guess time will tell. But we are very optomistic.

Pete is a sprinter and a sweet horse (not that that helps him run), we were not sure if he could get 6, and still not sure...but we do know everyday he matures. We never thought this horse would not rate at all and he is doing it a little. Chuckie (jockey) after the race said "I could have run from the gate for 2nd and he would have gotten it easily, but I wanted to win the race and did not realized Love Who would be so tough...those fractions killed us". Remember Pete also fell out of the gate and expended a lot of energy to get back up to full speed. He had some bad cuts too. But truth is unless he mentally matures over the winter he may just be a j-bred condition horse. But look at Beacon, he has made a lot of money being that.

As for Beacon, he is done the rest of the year. He mentally needed a break. We have one condition left and then it will be the turf but if that does not move his numbers up a lot, I agree, he will be become a claimer and the o/c claiming racing for j breds is a good spot. They didn't card them at Monmouth this year but maybe next year the will. When his head is screwed on right he fights and is very durable.

Frank and some other issues have caused a lot of tension amongst the team this year. Wont go into it more but ugggh. Frank is running Tuesday at the Meadowlands. I have not touched the website in Months but have been keeping the Facebook site up to date, become a fan.

Thanks for following us.
