The Making of a Champion Thoroughbred: A Race Horse Owner’s Blog - Entry 16

Updates- Well I have been running around with work and super busy but wanted to give a couple updates...

Beacon- came out of the race well and is being targeting for a race this weekend. I am concerned because horses off such a long layoff can bounce in their second start. We are making a jockey swtich, while early in the week we got a commitment from Channing Hill to ride, Eddie Castro's agent called and said they he would like ride Beacon. Both are very good jocks and the trainer needs to make a decision on who to ride because if you dont, you can be on tap to pay both if you win. Not good. My concern with Eddie is that as quickly as he got on he may jump off the next race. We want t a jockey who will stick with the horse. It is in the trainers court and we shall see.

Frank- came out well. An extra race came up going a mile and 1/16 on the turf. We entered for the Thursday past but the race did not fill only 5 entrants. They brought the race back Friday and it still did not fill. One more time for Saturday, maybe we can get one more entrant.

Karma- The track at Monmouth is so hard it is screwing with the babies...and Karma started to show the beginning of "shins"...so we are going to take her to the softer training center with Pete and hope her shins cool down.

On a final note if Frank and Beacon run it will be the first races that horses of mine are running and I am not their live....I have to leave early Saturday morning for Los Angeles for work. As soon as I land I will be turning on TVG for Frank, and on Sunday heading to Hollywood Park...sad but a must

Jockey agents

Thanks for the update, Dede. I wish both of your horses success in their races. It's interesting about the jockeys. Guess that could be a real problem at times. Now I understand why trainers are willing to give newer, or lesser riders a chance to ride one of their horses.
Could see where their agents play it like a game. Sounds like early on there's no real commitments. At least for the lesser trainers with lesser horses. Is it a surprise that Calvin Borel is going to ride, Mind That Bird in the Belmont? I don't think so.

I see ( Racing Form ad )where Lost In The Fog's trainer Gilchrist, is starting to form partnerships here in northern California. If I was younger and haven't lost so much money in stocks,( at least on paper ), I think I'd consider a venture such as this.

I am not familiar with his

I am not familiar with his partnership but usually those that advertise in the DRF have a lot of different buy in options. Ranging from large shares 10% and greater to smaller shares for as little as a half percent. You might be able to join for very little money, you wont make money but at least you will have all the experiences of ownership, which is so much fun.

Also I seem to remember you know somehow, so you got a good reference. A bad partnership can such up a lot of money, not everyone is so honest and upfront.

Also the jockey game is dizzying. So many things go on behind the scenes. Agents making deals, make commitments, backing out for other commitments, it gives one a headache. Plus having a jockey who's style matches your horse is important. Getting a front running jockey is not necessarily a best match for a horse who needs a jockey with patience to make one big run. Some of the top jockeys dont always listen either, and think they know more then the trainer (egos).

Beacon Beach is entered to

Beacon Beach is entered to run Sunday race 7 from post 6. Channing Hill will ride Beacon. I see that Castro did not get a mount for the race.

Rooting for Beacon Beach

I wish Beacon Beach the best of luck, a good ride and a good trip. Channing Hill is quite capable and I'm sure more reliable than some.
Back here in northern California, I always admired the relationship between Lost in The Fog's jockey ( Russel Baze ) , trainer G. Gilchrist and owner, ( Harry Aleo ) Of course, you get more respect when you're on top of the ladder.

ugh, horses are fragile

ugh, horses are fragile animals. Obviously Beacon was pulled up. Should be back to races soon if we can figure out what the new problem is and how to fix it.

Hope Beacon is okay

I'm sorry to hear about, Beacon. Hope he's okay and finds his best stride soon. I'm curious, Dede. There must be times when you feel like throwing in the crying towel. Are you and the others locked into this partnership, or is there a way out? I'm not suggesting you doing this. Was just thinking out loud. I know this is an expensive business.

I am pretty much locked in.

I am pretty much locked in. Once you buy in, you can walk away from your share, but since you already threw so much money in, it does not pay, or you can find someone else to buy you share, which is very hard to do.

Luckily our partners are not very patient, if anything we try and move the horse too soon. Generally, we will put him in an aggressive spot to win and maybe get claimed...problem is with Beacon he is talented it is physical problems. It is too soon to quit on him because I really believe he will run through his conditions this year....but while getting to that point I may cry.
