Smells Like Spring
April 1st was a big day for our 2 two year olds….X-ray day. As discussed previously horses knees have a gap (open) when they are young….as they mature the knees close up, and when they do their legs can sustain more pressure. A lot of the controversy over 2 year old in training sales is that babies are pushed too hard before their body can physically support it and do irreparable damage. That is why it is so important for you to know medically what you have.
Decision day was yesterday.
Results:
Karmageddon- “A”- knees are closed and now we can officially begin speed works on her.
Pinelands Pete- “C”- knees are still open and he need 60 days before he can begin speed training. Disappointed but not surprised. We are going to shut him down for 30 days (lay-up), and then in 30 days continue light training before…locking him into full training.
While this puts put behind Karma it is not all that bad…we are still early in the season and have plenty of time before 2 year old racing in NJ starts. He may not be ready for the first race in July but can still be more then ready by August or September.
Beacon Beach is gaining his old form and looks awesome at the track…once he starts adding the muscle he lost over the winter he will look the part too….very excited still about him.
Our newest addition Frank the Barber (from California) arrived at the training center. He arrived healthy but looked a little dull. He was in his stall for a couple days and yesterday jogged the track for the first time and seemed to perk up. Too early to tell where he fits…but I hope it is Jersey Bred stakes company.

How do you guys access where your horse fits or what their next race will be? Do you use a service to look at the upcoming races and other horses performance figures?

really good question and one
really good question and one that I could write on and on and on...so will keep it short. A number of factors help us determine where to run the horse. The first and most important is what the trainer tells us, he will make the determination on where to place the horse. Based on a number of factors like (cash flow, long term plan for horse, and our gut feel) we will make the ultimate decision. We are an active owner group and a pain but we stay involved and some trainers don't like that. Our trainer is comfortable with that relationship.
In the case of Frank and PPs will also point us where to go. Our trainer for Frank is very experienced with Stakes, allowance and high priced claimers....he will know what we got pretty quickly. As for what races we go to we do the old fashioned look at the condition book for each track and pick out races which may fit.
Sometimes you need to have a degree to read the condition book but we are quite good and the will point us where to go.

I personally think they have the best numbers in the business and use them for my handicapping. I know no one is in a rush to add another bill, but you can't argue with their results. I believe they were also involved in the purchase of Rachael Alexander.
Best of Luck
