The Grade 1 2009 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park Features the Amazing Zenyatta - Another Great Prebuilt Race for Our VIPs!

Wow! As if Rachel Alexandra wasn't enough to liven up a weekend, now our VIPs will be also be receiving Zenyatta in the Grade 1, $300,000 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park. Talk about a 'wild weekend with the ladies' - this is it! Zenyatta is 10 for 10 as she comes into this race and, of course, will be doing her best to increase that number to 11 straight wins. Dawn After Dawn, who drew the rail, won two minor stakes on turf at Santa Anita earlier this year. The presence of Briecat and Forest Melody could lead to an early duel. Briecat won the Grade 2 Bayakoa Handicap over 1 1/16 miles here last fall, leading throughout. Allicansayis Wow might have the best chance to upset Zenyatta, finishing third behind her in the Milady Handicap last month. Completing the field are Modification, Hot n' Dusty and You Lift Me Up.

VIPs, you can jockey two of the best fillies in the U.S. in the two prebuilt races you're receiving this weekend. What a thrill! See if Zenyatta can keep her undefeated streak going and chalk up win number 11. Or, perhaps Dawn After Dawn will have her own "day in the sun" and capture the glory instead. Whatever the result, you will truly enjoy this race.

If you're not a VIP and are reading this blog, my question is why don't you sign up for the VIP program RIGHT NOW?!? There are myriads of benefits associated with VIP membership. Read PrestonRocks' recent blog to see those benefits. He did a fantastic job of laying it all out for you. As he said, for the price of ONE movie that lasts approximately two hours, you can get a whole month's worth of fun - unlimited hours of exciting racing action. There are lots and lots of major stake events coming up. Receiving those prebuilt races of upcoming major events is just one of the many reasons to become a VIP - and now is the perfect time to join so you won't miss one of those races.

You've got your excitement cut out for you, VIPs. We hope you get a thrill out of racing Zenyatta AND Rachel Alexandra. We're happy that we can send these two very special races to you. Enjoy!

Love,
Michelle

Zenyatta to run in vanity

Zenyatta to run in Vanity at Hollypark

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — When overwhelming favorite Zenyatta aims for her 11th consecutive victory in Saturday’s $300,000 Vanity Handicap, Hollywood Park won’t even offer show betting on the race.

The unbeaten mare was such a sure thing in the Milady Handicap on May 23, when she scored a 1¾-length victory, that she cost the track money. The minus show pool for the Milady was $151,712.76, and Hollywood Park paid about $18,000 of that, spokesman Mike Mooney said Thursday.

A total of $817,589 was bet to show on the six fillies and mares in the race, with $745,418 of that wagered on Zenyatta, the 1-9 favorite. As a result, a $2 show bet on her paid 10 cents.

Hollywood Park officials expect similar circumstances Saturday, so they decided to scrap show betting and save themselves and their satellite wagering partners money, Mooney said.

“We still have to pay 5 cents on the dollar regardless,” he said. “If the odds were 1-to-1 billion, we still have to pay 5 cents on the dollar.”

It’s not unusual to declare no show wagering, which has happened in Hollywood Park races where fields are small. In the 1955 Hollywood Derby, Swaps was so respected by the bettors that only win betting was allowed.

Zenyatta will carry high weight of 129 pounds in the 1 1/8-mile Vanity, where she’ll spot her seven rivals 13 to 18 pounds. She won the race last year, when she earned the Eclipse Award for older female. She was runner-up to Curlin for Horse of the Year honors.

The 5-year-old Kentucky-bred mare won the Milady carrying high weight of 126 pounds. She’ll be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith. Owned by former A&M Records co-founder Jerry Moss and his wife, Zenyatta has career earnings of more than $2.2 million.

Trained by John Shirreffs, Zenyatta is based at Hollywood Park.

Also Saturday, Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra will be running at Belmont Park in the Mother Goose Stakes.

However, Rachel Alexandra’s owner Jess Jackson said she won’t run in the Breeders’ Cup on Santa Anita’s synthetic surface this fall, denying a potential showdown with Zenyatta.
