Racing Strategy

I wanted to talk a bit today about racing strategy, both in the game and in live competition. I am definitely a student of the sport. I do the best I can to make sure that I am as prepared as possible before I take to the track. For me, this preparation involves not only the physical aspects, but the mental aspects as well, which means that I spend time before each race studying forms, horses, and even other jockeys. But even though I like to be prepared, one thing I’ve learned in the more than 20,000 races that I’ve run is that things tend to change once I get out onto the track. Sometimes my horse won’t have as much speed and sometimes another horse can come out and show more speed than I was expecting.

The main thing to remember is that thinking on your feet is a big part of success in live racing and in the game. In the game, you might have a strategy in place before the race, but the computer might throw a bunch of horses at you that you weren’t necessarily expecting, which means that you have to readjust. But to me, that is part of the thrill that makes live racing and the game so much fun. I like having to adjust to whatever comes my way during a race. Really, in the game and in live racing, adjustment is key. Think about this. Sometimes we’ll see a race where there’s not a whole lot of speed, so a certain horse wins. Then the next race, there’s also not much speed and so the same horse wins again. Then it’s assumed that the horse has to be on the lead for the rest of the career, when maybe he just ran into two races where there wasn’t a lot of early pace. The point is that racing is a learning game, both in the game and on the live track. There’s always more to learn and always completely new races to be run. One of the things that makes the game so great is that it is exactly like that particular aspect of real racing – you can keep playing and trying different fields and horses, which helps you always be improving and challenging your skills.
