SECRETARIAT, a feature film produced by Disney that is set to premiere in theaters on October 10, 2010, is being edited right now and since it is the first feature length film about arguably the greatest racehorse that ever lived, it's an understatement to say that anticipation runs high for fans of the champion. Anticipation and, to be honest, a little anxiety.
There have been many truly exciting finishes in the 2009 racing season. Remember Rachel Alexandra stubbornly holding off the older boys in the Woodward, and the biggest stage of all in 2009 was the great Zenyatta using her familiar late kick to sweep past the field of high-class boys in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Yes, that finish was thrilling, but it was also not really that close.
Well, it's time to for us to start making our picks for the 2009 Eclipse Awards, as the time is fast approaching for the Oscars of horseracing to be handed out. For the purposes of this piece, I'm going to focus solely on the thoroughbred awards, not the steeplechase or jockey or trainer awards. It's all about the races, baby! So here we go!
The Meadow Stable was at a crossroads after the patriarch Christopher Chenery died in late 1972, leaving substantial estate taxes behind, and forcing his daughter Penny to have to decide whether to dissolve the stable or keep it going.
I've been looking forward to writing this entry for quite awhile, cuz I really do think 1973 was the single greatest year in racing history because of SECRETARIAT.
The principle photography on the movie on the incomparable SECRETARIAT has finished within the past week.
Great horseracing rivalries don't materialize as often as one would think. With the huge purses and super-lucrative breeding rights that are on the line in the contemporary climate of the highest level of thoroughbred racing, the opportunities for the best of the best to actually face each other on the track are few and far between.
The 1998 Breeders' Cup Classic featured a supremely talented field, including Silver Charm, Victory Gallop, and Skip Away. Quite simply, this field was arguably the most talent-laden in the the history of that prestigious race. There are some, to my mind, very interesting aspects of this race to consider.
I found this video and explanation from fellow Horse Racing Fantasy member andtheyreoff (visit his YouTube channel here) and, like him, I found it quite humorous to watch.
Today I make my case for Dr. Fager in the Kentucky Derby. One of the things about Dr. Fager that's clear just from scanning his past performance chart was that he was a superstar thoroughbred, definitely one of the greatest that ever stepped out on a track. Because he raced so long ago, there are many current racing fans who don't know that much about him.
